Adoption ABC's

This story is far from unusual. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, the top reasons people abandon their pets in shelters are issues like landlords that object to pets and the cost of pet food--the unforeseen problems that come up when people casually take on animals without thinking about the long-term future. Many of the pets in shelters today could have been spared if their owners had gone through a careful decision-making process before adopting them.

Can you commit?

It may seem simple, but people often forget that the most important part of adopting a pet is deciding whether you should have one at all. If you're revved up and ready to go get that puppy, stop for a moment to be sure. It's hard to check your enthusiasm, but you need to--ask yourself the tough questions. Answering them honestly now could save you and your pet from a heartbreaking situation later on.

• Do you have the space to keep an animal in your home? Some pets need a big, open lawn to run in.

• The average pet owner pays $150-350 for veterinary care each year, according to AAHA's Pet Owner Survey. Are you willing to spend this much or more? Can you afford to provide medical care, pet food, a cage, bedding, kitty litter, and/or a collar and leash?

• Are you very protective of your furniture, rugs, and other possessions? How upset would you be if you came home to find your shoes chewed or sofa scratched?

• Do you own your home or have a lease that allows pets? Pets can live for anywhere from four to 20 years or more. If you might be moving in the next five or ten years, will you be able to find a home that accepts pets?

• Do you have enough free time to exercise, play with, train, and give affection to a pet? To feed, groom, walk, and clean up after an animal?

• Are you expecting a child to be the animal's primary caregiver? When your son says he's going to feed the kitty, groom her, and clean the litter box, no doubt he means it with all his heart. But a child's attention is naturally fickle, and parents will probably end up performing most or all of the pet care.

It can be a terribly hard decision for an animal lover to make, but if you don't have the time, space, or resources to keep a pet healthy at this point in your life, sometimes choosing not to have one is the most loving thing you can do.

Finding the pet that fits

Now that you know you're ready to adopt your bundle of love, you need to decide what kind of animal is right for you. Your biggest considerations are space and time: if you live in a basement apartment and work 60 hours a week, you're best off considering a low-maintenance pet such as a hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, snake, or turtle. These pets aren't maintenance free, however: they do need fresh food and water, their cages need to be cleaned often, and they need to be observed carefully because they can become ill quickly.

If you have a bit more room and free time, a cat or dog could be the pet for you. Cats are the less demanding of the two. They can be happy in a small apartment, so long as they have plenty of toys to bat around and at least an hour of attention a day. Dogs, on the other hand, take the most time and effort of all the traditional pets. They need to be walked at least two to three times per day. Also, they are very social animals, and they need a lot of play and affection to stay healthy.

Dogs vary more between breeds than any other pet: think about how different it would be to live with a three pound Yorkshire terrier, for example, than to live with a 160-pound mastiff. If you're thinking about getting a dog, you should talk to your veterinarian about what breeds will best fit your needs based on size, temperament, grooming, and energy level. Be sure to consider mixed breeds as well--they often combine the best characteristics of several breeds in one package.

If you adopt a dog or cat, you should give some thought to the age you're looking for. Kittens and puppies are adorable, but they need to be housetrained and socialized. They are also generally much more rambunctious and mischievous than older animals, and they will probably leave you more messes to clean up. Adult pets, on the other hand, usually know the ins and outs of interacting with a human family.

Looking for love

Now it's time for the most fun part--picking out your new friend. Buying from a pet store generally isn't a good idea: these animals often come from places that don't treat animals well. Adopting from a breeder can work out well, but you must be sure the breeder is reputable and isn't breeding animals with genetic defects.

A wonderful alternative to buying is adopting a pet from a shelter. When you adopt, not only are you saving hundreds of dollars, but you're rescuing an animal from abandonment or euthanasia. Classified ads and signs advertising free puppies and kittens are one way to find pets who need "parents." Or, if you're looking for a more structured environment to adopt from, try a humane society or animal shelter. There are a variety of shelters across the US and Canada, some offering only cats or dogs and some offering a range of animals from dogs to pocket pets to exotics. Shelter workers can be a huge help as you pick out a pet: they get to know the animals they house, and they generally screen them for disease and behavioral problems. They can usually tell you the history of the animals you're interested in, how they behaved with their last family, and why they were given up to the shelter.

To protect the interests of their animals, shelters require adopters to show that they can be good pet parents. There is generally a requirement to be older then 18 or 21 and an adoption fee ranging from $40 to $90. Sometimes fees are higher because they include the cost of vaccinations, spaying or neutering, or microchip identification.

If you are interested in an adult purebred dog, you may want to look into rescue organizations. These groups focus on matching new owners with abandoned dogs of one specific breed. The organizations come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Some have their own boarding and training facilities and handle adoptions directly, while others function more as a referral service, matching a list of dogs in the area against inquiries from people who want to adopt. In either case, they are an excellent source of information about living with a certain breed.

Getting to know them

Wherever you choose to seek out your new fuzzy (or feathered or leathered) pal, be sure to spend some quality time with him before you take him home. Sit down with the animal you choose and start playing. Not only will this make it easier for your pet to adjust to you later, but it will also give you a chance to make sure he's social, responsive, and healthy. If you notice signs of a disability, chronic illness, or behavioral problem, that doesn't mean you shouldn't adopt your new friend. It just means you should talk to your veterinarian or a shelter worker to be sure that you have the resources to care for him. Living with pets with special physical or behavioral needs can be incredibly rewarding, but it takes some time and commitment.

In the long run, it's important to use as much logic as love when you get a new pet. It may be hard to be patient when you just want to run into the pet store and pick up the sweetest little thing on four legs, but the extra restraint is worth it. When your new best friend bounds through your front door for the first time, you'll be a happy pet parent, knowing you made the right choice for both of you.

Issues to consider when adopting a pet

.
A pet may be more expensive than you think. Be realistic about how much you can afford. Here's a run down of start-up expenses relating to different pets:

• Amphibians, reptiles, and fish: Aquarium, filter, heater, plants, owner's manual.
• Birds and rodents: Cage, bedding or cage liner, dishes, toys, owner's manual.
• Dogs and cats: License, collar, leash, brush, toys, dishes, bed, owner's manual.
.
Here are some other ongoing costs to consider:

Food
Bedding
Litter
Grooming or grooming supplies
Regular well-pet veterinary care
Sick, trauma, or emergency veterinary care
Vaccinations and other medical care as needed

Do you have the time and energy to feed, clean or groom, handle, train, exercise, and take your pet to the veterinarian regularly? Here's a run down of minimum time needed to provide basic care for a pet:

*Amphibians, reptiles, and fish
10 minutes per day, plus 3 hours every few weeks
*Hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits
30 minutes per day
*Cats and birds
30 to 60 minutes per day
*Dogs
More than one hour per day
.
Remember that these times are bare minimums, and all pets deserve to be in a loving home with people who have the time and energy to take care of them and spend time building the special bond.

Training Your Puppy

.
.
Who can fathom the mind of a puppy? Squirrels drive them crazy, garbage is their favorite snack and immediately after chewing your one-of-a-kind, handmade leather jacket into confetti, they can give you a look of such innocent love and adoration that you forget all about it. This kind of behavior can baffle and frustrate even the most conscientious of dog owners. When you bring a puppy home, she becomes part of your family; you need to be able to trust her with your home, your belongings and even your children. Managing your puppy's behavior is the key to having a peaceful and loving relationship with her.
.
To have a dog that makes a good, dependable companion, you're going to have to spend time training them. There's no other way for your puppy to know that chewing on an old knotted sock is acceptable, for example, while chewing on the sofa is not. She needs to be taught appropriate behavior calmly, gently, and--most important--consistently. As soon as you get your pup, you can start teaching her how to listen to you, how to act around people and other dogs, and generally to be the best-behaved dog ever.
.
The Alpha Owner
.
Though we'll never know exactly what your pooch is thinking when she chases her tail until she gets dizzy, we do have some insight into how dogs think about relationships. Wild dogs live and hunt in packs. This is an important model, because in every pack there are structured power relationships between members. The alpha dog is the provider for the pack. In a pack, nothing is given to a dog without performing a task. If a dog learns that they can jump up on the couch when they want, drag you down the street on the leash and get treats when they beg for them, they may decide that they are running the show. Puppies who are given everything for “free” will start to demand things and this can lead to aggression issues. They may start ignoring commands, jumping up where they're not supposed to jump, and protecting their food or their "territory" with growls. In extreme cases, they can begin biting.
.
In order to have a peaceful, manageable relationship with your dog, it's important that you establish the position that all humans are higher up in the hierarchy than them in the beginning. Do not use physical intimidation to establish human hierarchy. Physical intimidation can leave a dog feeling threatened and defensive, and may even provoke an attack. You don't need to raise your voice either; shouting can also make dogs nervous and provoke aggression.
.
Aggressive displays of dominance aren't necessary. Most dogs are perfectly happy submitting to a leader; they actually gain confidence and a sense of security from having someone to follow. A good pack leader projects a sense of strength by using a steady voice and reacts calmly to situations that make the dog nervous. The successful pack leader also provides food, shelter, and attention to the dog when she behaves appropriately. Having her repeatedly follow your commands (sit, stay and lie down) reinforces your position above her in the hierarchy. If you're still having a hard time, ask your veterinarian about special exercises designed to establish your position in the hierarchy.
.
One of the main ways to develop your position in the hierarchy is to start the “nothing in life is free” training. This means that once a dog has mastered a skill (like sitting or lying down) they must perform that skill to get something she wants. For example if your dog wants to go for a walk she must sit before you put her leash on. If your dog wants to be fed she must sit and stay until the bowl is put down and you have given her permission to go to the bowl is another example. Making your dog work for all of the things that she wants will help teach her that you are the leader and that listening to you will lead to rewards. It is very important that the dog has mastered the skill and knows what you want before you start the “nothing in life is free” training.
.
The Social Life
.

Socializing is one of the most important things you can do to train your young dog. Puppies are like sponges--ready to absorb all kinds of information about their world. In the first months of their lives, it's your job as a pet owner to teach them to bond with people and with other dogs and to be comfortable in unfamiliar situations. This is one of the most important things you can do for your fuzzy friend. The less afraid your puppy is of strange people and animals, the less likely she is to act defensively and attack another dog or even a child.
.
The socialization of puppies begins between three and four weeks of age (before most people bring their new pets home). This means that some of the work is left up to the puppy’s mother. If your puppy has been raised by a careless owner or breeder, you may have an uphill battle to fight when you get her home. Luckily, your puppy will continue the socialization process until she is about 12 weeks old, so you have plenty of time to give her good experiences. First of all, make sure she bonds with you and your family. Show her that she can depend on you for affection, food and gentle leadership. Between the age of 8 and 12 weeks is the perfect time to enroll your puppy into puppy classes. Puppy preschool will help socialize your pup with other puppies in a safe environment. Most puppy classes will require that your puppy has their first set of vaccines.
.

Once your pup feels safe with you and she's had all her vaccinations, you can introduce her to the big, wide world. Take her to lots of new and exciting places--the park, a friend's house or dog-friendly stores. Make sure she has plenty of chances to meet kind people and play with well-socialized dogs. Try to make trips to the veterinarian fun, with plenty of petting from you and the friendly veterinarian and technicians. It may be wise to withhold food for a couple of hours prior to a visit to the veterinarian so that they will be hungry and will want to eat treats given by both you and the veterinary staff. Introduce her to children, in a well-supervised environment. Show the kids how to speak calmly to her and pet her gently.
.
If your puppy acting nervous in a new situation or starting to bristle at a strange dog, try not to scold her. Raising your voice will only make her tenser. Trying to comfort her will backfire too. If she gets a lot of petting, cooing and attention every time she's scared or aggressive, she'll learn that reacting this way is a good thing. Instead, remain call and talk to her in a steady voice that is reassuring but not coddling. Try to focus her attention on something else. Toss a ball or a chew toy to her, or start playing her favorite game. When she gets absorbed in the game and starts ignoring the people or the dog that scared her, give her lots of praise. It is important to take your time and don’t push your puppy into situations where they are scared. Be patient, it may take several tries before she is fully ready to take on the scary situation. Baby steps will move you slowly to your goal. Soon she'll associate the scary situation with fun and playtime, and she'll become a canine socialite.
.
Think Positively
.
When most dog owners think about training their dog, they think in negatives. They want their puppy not to chew the furniture, not to piddle on the carpet and not to jump up on guests. This can get a little confusing from the puppy's point of view. Imagine you were a puppy home alone and you spent most of your day chewing on some loafers and spreading garbage around the kitchen. Then you nap for an hour and meet your family at the door when they come home. Suddenly they greet you with lots of yelling of "No!" What did you do wrong? Was it the chewing or meeting the family at the door? What were you supposed to do instead?
.
The key to keeping your puppy from doing what you don't want her to do is giving her a positive alternative--teaching her what you do want her to do. It is much easier to teach everything she can do rather than try to teach her everything she cannot do. For example, if you see your puppy dancing anxiously around the living room like she needs to go out, quickly let her outside. Stay near her the whole time she's out, and reward her with praise and a treat as soon as she relieves herself. This teaches her that going outside is a good thing. If you catch your puppy having an accident on the rug it is important to get her attention and take her outside immediately. Praise her when she goes potty outside. If you catch your puppy chewing on something you don't want her to chew on, distract her with one of her "good" chew toys. Whenever you catch her chewing on one of her toys, reward her. The key to effective training--try to catch your puppy doing something good, like sitting still instead of jumping up or sleeping on the floor instead of the bed. Make a point of noticing these behaviors and rewarding them with attention, praise or treats.
.
Training is a gradual process and it can be a difficult road to walk alone. It's vital that your entire family agrees and commits to a training plan that you all respond the same way when your dog misbehaves as well as when she behaves perfectly. Remember to be persistent and above all, patient. Your puppy's going to make a lot of mistakes and may destroy a few of your belongings. However, she is eager to please you. She needs your love, attention and guidance to be the good dog you know she can be.

Money for just 10min. a day

What is Bux.to?
.
Bux.to is an advertising system. But not like Adsense and Adbrite - it pays to its users to visit the ads.
.
You may think why should somebody want to advertise there?
.
- Because it's much cheaper than any other service.
- The people have to look at the ad for 30sec. and if they like something - they buy it.
.
Through the years the phrase "Make Money Online" became like a myth - no one believes to it anymore. There are hundreds of sites that don't pay - just lie to their users, but Bux.to isn't like them.
.
I was sceptic when I joined too
.
It was like "to check if it works". My friends had signed and wanted me to become their referral - so I did it. And I'm happy about that. The funny thing is that my friends quit - but I am still making money there.
.
Why did they quit?
.
We're not talking about "Get rich quickly" here. We're talking about a program which needs patience. You should be serious, and know that nothing good happens "in a blink of an eye". So I guess here is the moment to ask you:
.
Dear guest of this blog, if you feel that the information is too much for you to read it, or you think constancy and seriousness are not the best parts of you - Bux.to is not for you.
.
You think now: What about the 10 minutes?
.
Okay. Here is how the system works:
.
- Every day on Bux.to are listed about 10links to sites - ads. You should click on all of them - one by one - and wait 30 sec. to watch each page.
- For every page view you get $0.01, so for 10links a day - $0.10, for a month - $3.00. But don't get disappointed, we haven't reached the good part yet. You can make $500.- The referrals - they are the key thing here. You should tell about this site to your family and friends. So about the referrals
.
-You get 100% of all the money they make
..
So, if you have 1 serious referral you'll make $6 a month. That's why I said that it takes time before you start making real money. Make the calculations if you have 20 = $60 from them and $3 from you = 63$
Now if you have 100 referrals you can make 300$ a month!
I'll explain you in some of the next posts how to get more referrals. And remember the man who is your referral does not lose anything from you!

If this information is enough for you to start, please do it through my referral link :

Notas naturales: DO – RE – MI – FA – SOL – LA – SI.

Notas alteradas: DO# / REb – RE# / MIb – FA# / SOLb – SOL# / LAb – LA# / Sib.

MI – FA – FA# - SOL – SOL# - LA – LA# - SI – DO – DO# - RE – RE# - MI
